Undergraduate Thesis: Writing Rules to Be Observed

Your undergraduate thesis is probably the hardest paper that you will be expected to write to date. It is a paper that is meant to incorporate the information that you have learned throughout your education. It will require a lot of effort and time. You need to stay focused and chip away at it over the course of your last year in school. This is not an assignment that you will be successful with if you choose to wait until the last minute to start it.

Create a plan to ensure that you will be able to complete the assignment on time. You can do this by creating a schedule and sticking to that schedule. Have dates set that you would like to have your research done by and a date for your first draft. This way you won’t be overwhelmed by having too much to do with not enough time to do it.

There are some specific writing guidelines to consider when you start writing your undergraduate thesis. These guidelines will ensure that you don’t lose unnecessary points for formatting issues.

  1. Follow the specific formatting guidelines for your school.

Every school is different, so there may be different requirements for each school. Most schools require that you write your paper in APA formatting style. Be sure to find out what formatting style you need to use to complete the paper. Some schools will dock you almost a tenth of your points for formatting errors.

  2. Make sure your paper includes all the necessary sections.

Your thesis should include a title page, acknowledgement page, table of contents page, abstract page, introduction, source review, results, discussion, conclusion, resource page, and appendices if needed. These need to be formatted correctly on the appropriate pages. For example, the abstract should have its own page.

What should the major parts include?

The abstract part of the paper should be a summary of the entire study. It should include a brief description of the study along with the issues that you are discussing and a brief summary of the results.

The introduction should consist of background information and contain the thesis statement and any definitions for words used that are not common knowledge. For example, you would want to give definition for words that are specific to the study or study subject. The source review section should show a synopsis of all of the sources that you used.

These tips should help you write a successful thesis paper. Good luck and remember to choose a topic that you are interested in.
